Another great time in paradise is in the books. Despite some tough weather that challenged anglers, our Let’s Talk Hookup/ Palmas de Cortez tournament was a success. Weather and fishing were fantastic for most of September and early October, but Santa Ana winds started blowing in southern California and sent the first north winds of the season to the east cape. It was still fishable, but uncomfortable, and while some boats struggled, several had limits of tuna by 9am. We had 65 anglers and 22 boats participate for some great prizes supplied by Makaira Pulling Lures, Statewide Stripes, Fishermans Landing Tackle, Palmas de Cortez, Maui Jim and Let’s Talk Hookup. A total of over $4000 in cash and prizes was up for grabs for this “fre
e to enter” fun tournament.
First place was regulars in our tournament “Team Go Uglier Earlier Again” aboard MI Pistola and Rude Boy. They had a total of 310.6 points with a combination of tuna, including the largest tuna at 49.6 pounds that earned them $500 cash from Dave at Statewide Stripes. They also received a return trip to Palmas de Cortez next October to defend their title, a great set of trophies and two custom Makaira Pulling Lures.
Second place was “Team Fishin’ Physicians” with Mark Rubin and Felix Bopp. They had a total of 177. 6 points including tuna plus marlin and sailfish released. They fished aboard “Miss Petunia” and won 2- $75 gift card to Fishermans Landing Tackle, trophies and two custom Makaira Pulling Lures.
Third Place was “Team Old White Privileged Guys” with Bob Felli and Carl Martin. They fished aboard Maria 2 and Pez Espada and released a marlin and caught a bunch of tuna. They won 2- $50 gift card to Fishermans Landing Tackle, trophies and two custom Makaira Pulling Lures.
Most Billfish Released, good for a certificate for a pair of Maui Jim Sunglasses, trophy and a custom Makaira Pulling Lure was “Old Guys Drool” Burt and Dan fishing aboard Maria 2 and El Patron. They released 2 marlin and a sailfish.
Largest wahoo, good for $500 cash from Let’s Talk Hookup and a custom
Makaira Pulling Lure was a 28.2 pounder caught by “The Taylors’ aboard Fantastic.
Totals for the tournament were 65 anglers on 22 boats released 14 billfish, and more than a thousand pounds of tuna weighed in. Thanks to Mark Weir, John Textoris and Rich Topp for running the tournament. Thanks to Holly Donaldson and the group from Dana Point Yacht Club for joining in the fun again and all the regulars and new friends that joined us. A huge thank you to Eddie Dalmau and the VanWormer family for t-shirts, trophies, grand prize and hosting a fantastic time at their beautiful resort. The tournament as always is dedicated to the memory of our great friend Lou Duchene.
